Visit a Fossil Site |
The fossil Hominid Sites of Sterfontein, Swartkrans, Kromdraai and Environs, known as the Cradle of Humankind was declared a World Heritage Site on December 2nd 1999 in Marocco. The area of 48 000 hectares is of outstanding universal value as it contains a complex of palaeo-anthoropological sites, which has yielded some of the most valuable evidence, world wide, of the origins of modern humans. Embedded in the rocks, are the fossilized remains of hominids, their lithicultural remains and fossils of other plants, animals and pollen giving a complete picture of the hominids and their surroundings dating back over 3,3 million years. More recently, the area contains archaeological sites dating to the Early, Middle, and Late Stone Age, the Early and Late Iron Age, and recent history such as Boer War relics. There are twelve explored sites within the Cradle of Humankind area, with only Sterkfontein Caves and Wonder Caves open to the public. Amongst the most remarkable findings to have been made is the famous Mrs. Ples and 'Little Foot', a 3,3 million years old, almost complete, ape-man skeleton. In addition more than 500 hominid fossils, thousands of animal fossils, over 300 fragments of fossil wood, and over 9 000 stone tools-some of them the oldest in Southern Africa have been found. |
